George R. Brownlee, an elder at the Calvary Gospel Church contacted the Ukrainian Community Center in Irvington, NJ to inquire how their congregation could help the people in Ukraine during this time of need. The Church leaders decided to start by having their Sunday School students perform fundraising activities to raise money. The congregation then added to the total collected by the students and, after a Sunday service in August of 2022, presented a check for $1000 to representatives of the Ukrainian Community Center and the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church (Hillside, NJ). While thanking the congregation after the presentation, Michael Szpyhulsky was politely interrupted by the pastor, who said that there was no need to thank them “because we felt it was our responsibility to help.” What a wonderful manifestation of Christian kindness!
